Symonds & Sampson were delighted to sponsor the Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society Countryside Day annual hedge laying competition on Sunday, hosted at Bagborough Farm, Pylle by kind permission of Mr Roger Longman. Undeterred by the wet weather and testing ground, competitors and spectators turned out in force for the action-packed day to enjoy a vintage tractor run, land rover meet, clay pigeon shooting and have a go gun dog scurry.Hedge laying is a rural craft, enjoyed by many and encouraged through the Government’s Countryside Stewardship Capital Grants and other such schemes. The BN5 grant, for example, is offering a £13.52/metre payment for hedgerow laying, the BN6 grant offers a £5.33/metre payment for hedgerow coppicing and the BN10 grant a £5.82/metre payment for hedgerow supplement – top binding and staking.
As well as these hedgerow options there are also grants available for fencing; the FG1 grant offers £6.34/metre payment for fencing, and the FG2 a £7.47/metre payment for sheep netting fencing.
