Apprentice Route To Becoming A Surveyor

Published: 19/11/2025 By Will Machin

The apprenticeship route into surveying is an exciting alternative to the traditional university pathway, offering the chance to gain a degree while building hands-on experience in the workplace. Will Machin, Apprentice Rural Surveyor in our Yeovil Office, explains more about his apprenticeship journey.

"I am currently completing my degree apprenticeship with Harper Adams University while working out of Symonds & Sampson’s Yeovil office. This dual approach allows me to directly apply the academic theory I study in practical work, whether that’s a Redbook valuation, a compensation claim, or the sale of a block of land. Every week brings new challenges, and the variety ensures I am continually learning and developing.

"A key strength of the apprenticeship is the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues. Working day-to-day alongside qualified surveyors provides invaluable mentoring and insight into the profession that cannot be taught in a lecture hall. At the same time, I am working towards a degree and the qualifications required to progress towards becoming a chartered surveyor.

"Another major benefit is the ability to earn while learning. The apprenticeship route removes many of the financial pressures associated with full-time study and allows you to earn while completing the course.

"For those interested in a career in surveying, the apprenticeship route offers the best of both worlds: academic study combined with practical, workplace learning, while spanning the same timeframe as the typical university route to becoming qualified."
