Stuart Philipps, Residential Sales Partner, reflects on the history of the former Brewery and the transformation of this historic and prominent site, which became the new home of our Dorchester Office earlier this year.

Our firm has been part of the county town's fabric for over a century. In recent years, we've expanded our reach, establishing offices at Queen Mother Square and Burraton Square in Poundbury. We're thrilled to add another chapter to our story with the opening of our newest office at Brewery Square on Weymouth Avenue.

Nestled in the heart of Dorchester, Brewery Square and Eldridge Pope Brewery's history resonates through time, bridging the brewing legacy with a modern transformation into a vibrant hub of commerce, culture, and leisure. This journey of evolution from a historic brewery to a bustling contemporary destination unveils a captivating story of revitalisation and renewal.

The story begins with Eldridge Pope Brewery, founded in 1881 by Charles and William Eldridge, alongside Henry and Alfred Pope. Renowned for producing fine ales and becoming an integral part of Dorchester’s identity, the brewery thrived for over a century, crafting a practice deeply rooted in the town’s tradition. The iconic Eldridge Pope Brewery symbolised not only the craftsmanship of brewing but also served as a significant employer and cultural cornerstone for the community.

However, as industrial dynamics shifted, the brewery eventually closed its doors in 1999, leaving behind a historic landmark and a void in the town’s landscape. Yet, the vision to rejuvenate this significant site emerged.

Step into Brewery Square, a visionary redevelopment project that has breathed new life into the historic Eldridge Pope Brewery grounds and the town. This ambitious initiative has not only preserved the area’s rich history but also embraced the demands of modern living. Today, Brewery Square is a vibrant hub, offering a diverse array of shops, boutiques, eateries, and leisure facilities. Its carefully curated selection of retailers, artisan cafes, and restaurants caters to diverse tastes, creating a lively social scene. Visitors can explore various shopping options, dine at renowned restaurants, or unwind in the leisure spaces.

The journey from the historic Eldridge Pope Brewery to the contemporary marvel of Brewery Square is a testament to the harmonious blend of preserving heritage with progressive urban development. It's more than just a shopping and dining precinct; it's a living testament to Dorchester's rich history and promising future, a future that Symonds & Sampson is proud to be a part of.
