Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Reform: Have your Say!

Published: 06/01/2025 By Patrick Diskin- Barr

If you have bought, sold or let property in recent years, you’ll be all too familiar with Energy Performance Certificates (EPC). For the first time since they were introduced in 2007, the Government is conducting a review into EPCs. Our Building Surveyor, suggests why we should all have our say.

We are all familiar with EPC’s, they show how energy-efficient a property is. They help us to:
  • Understand potential energy costs
  • See how environmentally friendly a home is
  • Find ways to improve energy efficiency
The government is planning big changes to make EPCs more useful and accurate. Some of the key proposed changes include:
  • More Frequent Updates: EPCs are currently valid for 10 years, this might be reduced to 2-7 years
  • Listed buildings may no longer be exempt from needing an EPC
  • New features: EPCs could include new ways to measure energy use, carbon emissions, and how well a building retains heat
  • Smart Technology: EPCs might assess how ready a building is for smarty energy systems
Changes to EPCs could not only affect the value of your property, but also how easy it will be to sell or let. Therefore, Patrick suggests heading to the Government website here where you'll find further information about the proposed changes, and click here to share your views before the consultation closes on 26 February.

Meanwhile, in advance of any changes, you could contact us on 01202 639400 to arrange for a sustainability, energy efficiency and retrofit assessment of your property to ascertain the steps that you could take now to improve its efficiency, and any grants that might be available towards the recommended work.
