Today, we bid farewell to Fergus Warren as he heads back to Harper Adams University (HAU) after completing his placement year with Symonds & Sampson. He has been an invaluable member of the Rural and Professional department working between Axminster and Bridport offices. He reflects on the many opportunities he has enjoyed during his time with us here.“I began my placement year with Symonds & Sampson in mid-July 2024, after completing my second year at Harper Adams University, where I study Rural Enterprise and Land Management. Working across the firm’s Bridport and Axminster offices, I have gained a broad and valuable range of experience, assisting with both agricultural agency work and professional services.
My year began with the Honiton and Melplash agricultural shows, where I had the opportunity to meet clients and help ensure the events ran smoothly. During this period, I also attended several farm dispersal sales — a highlight being when I helped secure a Valtra loader tractor for a client as a telephone bidder.
As the days shortened and the agency market naturally began to slow, my workload shifted towards valuations and professional advisory work. With the changes introduced in the Autumn Budget, it was certainly an interesting and dynamic time to be gaining industry experience.
Spring brought a surge of properties and land to the market, with added complexity and intrigue resulting from market changes post-Budget. It was also a busy season for Grass Keep renewals and Farm Business Tenancy renewals, keeping everyone in the office fully occupied.
This placement year has provided me with essential hands-on experience across a wide range of areas within the profession. It has given me a solid foundation as I return to complete my degree and look ahead to entering the wider industry with confidence.”
We wish Fergus the best of luck as he returns to HAU to complete his degree. If you would like to know more about careers in property and positions currently available within the firm please click here.
