Symonds & Sampson’s June auction coincided with Royal Ascot and the Euros, but this did not deter bidders from stepping away from racing and football to bid strongly by telephone or via the Internet.Auctioneer Mark Lewis confirms that £5 million was raised for the firm’s clients, returning a success rate of 95% - the best return in the southwest (outside Bristol) this month. “When the election was called, we were nervous that some buyers may wait for the result before committing themselves, but this was not the case with very good bidding from home and abroad. I am just glad we held the auction before the England match when confidence was high, rather than afterwards when everybody was a bit flat!”
Auctions partner Meredith Wallis added “Our auctions are a very good and transparent way to establish the true market price for a lot. Symonds & Sampson had strong connections with many of the sellers – many of whom had owned their properties for generations – and buyers who had bought and sold with us before.
Amongst the highlights were:
Land in Dorset and Somerset sold for £11,500 per acre.
A freehold block of flats in Bournemouth sold for 26% above the guide (9.9% yield).
A cottage at Nether Compton sold for 12% above the guide.

The star of the show, however, was a bungalow for refurbishment or replacement near Shaftesbury with 17 acres. Six bidders battled it out and the price rose steadily with the gavel falling at £720,000 (52% above guide).”

Symonds & Sampson’s next auction is on 25 July and there are 37 lots in Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire, and Somerset.
