Symonds & Sampson are proud to be part of the local community. We host fundraising events in Poundbury for our nominated charities, and sponsor many local events, including the popular Chesil Rocks music festival, Beerex, Dorset Show and Spring Show, the Kite Festival, the Sunflower Trail, Dorchester Literary Festival, and many local school and village fetes, open gardens, school events, art exhibitions and many more social and community events throughout the region. We are keen followers and supporters of local sporting events, sponsoring Weymouth Hockey Club, Dorchester Rugby Football Club, and the Meercats Volleyball team. Out & About - Sport, Leisure and Culture in Poundbury
Wandering through the streets of Poundbury, you will find endless pretty squares, fountains and quiet spaces. It is an architectural cacophony of style, ranging from Georgian elegance to cosy village streets and everything in between. Ground was first broken in 1993, as King Charles (as then Prince of Wales) set out to ‘break the mould of conventional housing development in this country’. Building is due to finish in 2028, and Poundbury is currently home to some 5000 people with over 260 shops, cafes, offices and factories.
Poundbury provides a good range of amenities including Waitrose, two public houses, a butcher, the renowned Monart Spa, galleries, coffee houses, an optician, restaurants and a garden centre. Across the Poundbury development, there are a variety of boutiques, a post office, a veterinary practice, dental and doctors' surgeries, along with a number of specialist outlets.
Dorchester town centre is situated approximately 1.5 miles away and offers a comprehensive range of shopping, commercial and recreational facilities including two cinemas and a library.
There’s plenty to keep you active in the local area with golf at Came Down and Wolfedale, thriving rugby, tennis and squash clubs, bowls, and football, and a well-equipped 1610 leisure centre amongst many other activities. A haven for culture, Poundbury and nearby Dorchester are home to the renowned Dorset County Museum, the Corn Exchange, Brownsword and Jubilee Halls, and historic churches and venues that host a calendar of Art Society talks, concerts, and events, attracting a regular following.
The Great Field is a popular open space with its ‘fit for a king’ playpark and café, sports facilities, and is home to the popular weekly Park Run. Further afield, Maiden Castle, Hardy’s Cottage, and Max Gate are great for exploring, as are the many miles of footpaths and bridleways in the surrounding countryside and along the Jurassic Coastline, just a short drive to the south. At the heart of Dorset, Poundbury and the surrounding countryside offer a host of creative artists, makers and growers, with local vineyards and cider makers particularly enjoying national acclaim. Local craft and food fairs are not to be missed!
