Out & About - Sport, Leisure and Culture in Axminster & East Devon
There’s plenty to keep you active in and around Axminster, with golf at Lyme Regis and Axe Cliff, thriving cricket, bowls, and football amongst many other activities, as well as a well-equipped leisure centre and Cloakham Lawn Sports Centre.
The Axminster Heritage Centre is a fascinating interactive museum where you can explore the town’s rich carpet-making history. It is also the venue for film screenings, workshops and events. Concerts are regularly held at The Guildhall and Minster Church. The town has a thriving Amateur Drama Club and Choral Society (both of which we are proud to support), a library, and historic churches and venues that host a diary of talks, concerts, and events, attracting a regular following within the local community. A short distance away, the Marine Theatre hosts a diverse programme of events at its stunning seafront position in Lyme Regis.
Explore the historic town on foot, or head further afield to the River Axe, Seaton Wetlands, or to one of the three National Landscapes on its doorstep (East Devon, the Blackdown Hills, and Dorset), making Axminster an ideal base from which to explore idyllic countryside and enjoy outstanding walks that will take you deep inland or over rolling hills. A short trip to the south takes you to the beautiful Jurassic coastline. a 95-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the fossil-rich beaches, cliffs, the fascinating Axmouth to Lyme Regis undercliff, and delightful coastal and country villages.
