Out & About - Sport, Leisure and Culture in Blandford Forum

There’s plenty to keep you active in and around Blandford Forum, with golf at Ashley Wood, thriving squashcrickettennis and football clubs, and a leisure centre, amongst many activities.

At the heart of the town’s culture is the renowned Blandford Museum, where records of the town’s history include the great fire of 1731, which destroyed the town centre, following which it was rebuilt in its elegant Georgian style by the Bastard Brothers. Hall & Woodhouse Brewery have been brewing in the town since 1777, and the town is home to the Royal Corps of Signals, the communications wing of the British Army, and the site of the Royal Signals Museum. An Arts Society, Literary festival, and many concerts hold events in the town and nearby venues, including Bryanston School, drawing a following. The Chalke Valley History Festival has become a popular feature on the calendar.

Blandford and the surrounding countryside are home to a host of creative artists, makers and growers, with local vineyards and cider makers particularly enjoying national acclaim.  Local craft and food fairs are not to be missed!

Surrounded by scenic countryside including three National Landscapes, Dorset, the Cranborne Chase with its wildlife and history, and the chalk downland of the West Wiltshire Downs, there are miles of country lanes, pretty villages, and riverside walks to explore, including the Dorset Trailway. Or, follow the River Stour through Wimborne to Christchurch. Poole Harbour, the largest natural harbour in Europe, lies a short drive to the south, providing a stunning location for all types of watersports, fringed with unspoilt woodland and coastal walks.
