Sheeps Tor - an iconic Dartmoor landscape for sale

Whether your passion is history, legend, or the beauty of an unspoilt landscape – Sheeps Tor, for sale through Symonds & Sampson offers an opportunity to own a unique piece of our heritage in a wild dramatic setting.  The iconic Dartmoor landmark of Sheeps Tor occupies a commanding position at 369m above sea level, dominating Burrator reservoir.  From the summit of this imposing Tor the magnificent panoramic views stretch in all directions over Dartmoor to the Devon/Cornwall borders.

The quintessential moorland landscape has inspired a range of much-loved literature - from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes adventure Hound of the Baskervilles to Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse.  The spectacular Sheeps Tor features as a backdrop for Stephen Spielburg’s film adaptation of War Horse.  ‘According to legend the tor is occupied by piskies who live in a small cave which is found amongst the clitter’.

The property includes Sheeps Tor, part of Sheeps Tor Common and part of Yellowmead Down which includes the Yellowmead stone circle.  This important example of a Bronze Age monument of four stone circles around a cairn with a stone row extending away from the south west side was excavated and restored by Rev. H Breton in 1921.  It is part of the highest concentration of monuments of this type in the country. The property’s northern boundary is marked by granite marker posts, the southern side by stone walls and north east by the Drakes Leat, a man-made stream installed by Sir Francis Drake to supply water to Plymouth city. The nearby settlement of Sheepstor was first recorded in the 12th century and its name derives from the Old English Scyttel meaning bar or bolt relating the shape of Sheeps Tor.  In the village church are the graves of the three White Rajahs of Sarawak.

So, if after a year of lockdown, you are yearning for the perfect escape from the pressures of modern life, to experience freedom and a connection to nature, surrounded by reminders of our deep past, this ruggedly beautiful Dartmoor gem offers the perfect solace.

In all, this wonderful opportunity extends to 127.35 acres (51.54 ha) of freehold moorland.  The Guide Price is £145,000, and it is for sale by Livestream Public Auction on 21 May 2021.  For further information about Sheeps Tor, contact Ross Willmington or Angela Gillibrand at Symonds & Sampson on 01297 33122.
