Striking  Gold in the attic

A few years ago Symonds & Sampson found the key to a locked building and discovered an Aladdin’s cave of old archive material. This included posters, particulars and maps of farms and property sold from the 1920’s through to the 1970’s. The items were sold off for charity but there are still many boxes that remain untouched.

During some maintenance work more treasures have been found as Mark Lewis explains “ We always thought there may have been some papers in one of the hay lofts but were unsure how to access it. The door, however, needed replacement and we then found a very dusty area with about 200 hessian bags full of paperwork. It has been so exciting and the papers, this time, go back to the late 1800’s. It is, however, a filthy job because they are covered in years of grime and muck and we are slowly cataloguing what we have found, something for the dark winter evenings!

“ We will be contacting as many people as possible to see if they would like the file on their property, the first bag was full of files relating to Clapham, and we will, again, be collecting donations for our chosen charities.”
