Featured Artists 2021 – Phyllis Wolff
Symonds & Sampson are continuing to feature artwork on the covers of their collective property auction catalogues during 2021. This stunning wildlife mural by Phyllis Wolff has been chosen for the catalogue for the auction on 23 April.
Phyllis studied art at Goldsmiths’ College and St Martins School of Art, and taught at Kingston School of Art before moving to Dorset in 1975. She has built a reputation as an important Dorset artist, represented in private and public collections, as well exhibiting widely in galleries in England and abroad. Sometimes working in watercolour, charcoal, or making prints, Phyllis’ preferred medium is oil on canvas. Much of her work is figurative: portraits, still lifes; however, inspiration from the nature and stunning landscapes of Dorset such as this mural have earned her the title ‘The Dorset Colourist’.
The fascinating story of how this stunning mural came to be painted on the library wall at Ludwell Primary School can be found here, and Phyllis will be working with Lesley Malpas and Operation Future Hope to nurture a love of wildlife in children through art and re-wilding projects in schools.
Phyllis’ studio at Compton Abbas will be open by appointment during Dorset Arts Week 2021 (22 May – 12 June).
