A Focus on… Poundbury.

Known as the town Prince Charles built, Poundbury sits upon the hill just outside the County town of Dorchester overlooking the famous Iron Age Hill town of Maiden Castle and has received much media attention and accolades.

There is no where quite like Poundbury. A 25 year old town with all the architecture of 500 years, and there is no doubt that the town boast some impressive buildings. Houses come in all shapes and sizes from small cottages to grandiose Georgian town properties  and penthouses in buildings fit for a Queen. High-street chains are all but banned in the town, and independent shops and eateries rule supreme.

Eating & Drinking

There are plenty of cafes and lunch venues to keep even the harshest of food critics full including MasterChef winner, Mat Folas’s Bramble Café. If you fancy a drink after a long day or a pub meal there are two venues, the magnificent Duchess of Cornwall on Queen Mother Square and  The Poet Laureate offering a more local feel. The new development of Brewery Square is just a short walk away and offers craft beer, an ice cream parlour as well as larger chains including Wagamama, Cote, Zizzis, Nandos & Pizza Express.

Shopping

Poundbury is full of gorgeous independent shops. Some of our favourite include; Cherryade and Gallimaufry for beautiful and original knickknacks and interiors. Yard and Clath for the fashion conscious stocking boutique and designer brands. The Brace of Butchers offers a selection of qualities meats, cheeses and ingredients with a small Waitrose to stock up on the other essentials. There is also a thriving farmers market monthly which boast over forty stalls.

Schooling

There are a number of well-regarded schools in the area including the Damer’s First School in Poundbury itself, and Thomas Hardy Secondary School which is one of the top performing state schools. There are also a number of Prep and Public Schools including Sunninghill and Bryanston within a 35 minute drive.

Things to Do

The modern 1610 gym lies just outside Poundbury and offers a plethora of sporting activities for the gym bunnies and the dedicated yoga studio in Poundbury is perfect those looking to relax. If pampering is more your style there are a number of beauty salons and hairdressers.

Crafty? Book a cake decorating class at the truly exceptional Angel Cake Company (follow them on Instagram and you wil know what I mean!)

Dorchester offers two cinemas (our favourites the Plaza offering £2.50 tickets in the week), there is a nearby golf course and the larger seaside town of Weymouth has a whole variety of activities and has a thriving nightlife.

Transport

There is a regular electric bus from Poundbury to Dorchester and the train station in Dorchester has a direct line to London and Exeter.

Properties

As mentioned the houses are varied and property prices tend to range from £180,000 all the way up to a million and more for some of the towns finest properties.
