12 Walks of Christmas - Day 11 - Eype Down
Rural Surveyor Annabel Douglas suggests today's coastal walk on Eype Down, West Dorset.
This fabulous walk on the West Dorset coast is quite challenging, but well worth the workout!
Find a spot to park on Eype Down Road, off the A35 near Bridport, and head up onto Eype Down, a wild exposed spot which seems to have changed very little over the decades. The Down is covered in bracken, a haven for local wildlife, boasting amazing inland views of the iconic Colmers Hill, town of Bridport and countryside beyond.
Gather your strength and make your way to the top of the Down, then follow the winding downward path before emerging into open fields. Keep your dog on a lead for the next section, which sees you traverse National Trust farmland to historic Thorncombe Beacon. Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast can be seen to your right and the full splendour of the dramatic Jurassic Coast can be appreciated from this vantage point.
Follow the footpath left to Down House Farm (where there is a café March to October offering essential ice cream). Then take the bridleway back onto Eype Down and cross the Down to complete your circuit. Dog and human will be tired but in my opinion, this walk takes some beating.
For refreshments after the walk, the position of The Anchor at Seatown, overlooking the beach is hard to beat.
