Published: 19/01/2024 By Salome ShaddickSalome Shaddick was one of the ‘Covid-19’ affected students, for whom student life was far from what she anticipated. She enrolled on the Rural Enterprise and Land Management Degree course at Harper Adams University (HAU) in September 2019. By December, online learning had replaced live lectures, and in her entire second year of education, she didn’t have a single face-to-face lecture at all.
The course required a work placement for the third year of study and Salome’s search for a role fortuitously coincided with Symonds & Sampson opening a new office in Tiverton in April 2021, and she duly became the first placement student within the firm. ‘I immediately felt part of the team’ recalls Salome, who welcomed involvement in a diverse range of rural land and business work under the guidance of and with the support of Partner, Paul Heard. ‘Paul was encouraging, constructive, and alongside other experienced surveyors within the firm, ensured that I gained experience in a wide range experience. Consequently, the year flew by in a flash, and I returned to HAU with a broad skill set and as a well-rounded and adaptable professional to complete my final year, drawing on the experience and knowledge gained during my placement to complete my degree.
With my BSc safely under my belt, I was delighted to return to the Tiverton Office as a Graduate Rural Surveyor in July 2023. The transition back to the professional realm felt seamless, as the work environment was already familiar. The dynamic nature of my role ensures that each day presents unique challenges, reinforcing my belief in the greatness of the rural surveying industry, and appreciating the opportunity to undertake a broader diversity of work than one might experience in larger offices. I am supported and encouraged in equal measures and am building my client base whilst collaborating with colleagues within planning, auctioneering, and property agency sectors within the firm.
The next step for me is to sit my APC exams later this year, and achieve my aspiration to become a fully qualified Rural Surveyor.
