Organic Farming

The area of land used for organic farming has been rising steadily over the past decade, with some 100,000 acres (40,000 hectares) registered as organic land in England (MAFF).

The benefit to the farmer has come from a premium being paid on organic produced coupled with lower input costs, which have maintained or increased gross margins. The higher returns are due to the public perception of organic farming which includes lower reliance on chemicals, better standard of accommodation and husbandry for stock, more healthy produce, reduction in use of fossil energy and reduced surpluses leading to reduced membership costs for the European Union.

In practice, the market for organic produce has expanded considerably with much reliance on imported products to satisfy demand. Further opportunities exist for the conversion of land to organic status within all sectors, with grants available to assist through the transition period, and advice freely available on subsequent marketing of produce.
